Personal Email Accounts from Gmail, Yahoo, MSN, AOL ...

Do you have an email account?
Oh, yes I do. But I prefer texting.  (since I never read it my emails).

While many of us continue to neglect personal email accounts, we still need them. At least to help us reset our 'Forgotten Passwords'.

For different reasons, some users have multiple email accounts. The question is, if you have more than one, how often do you check them?

How often do you go and clean up the clutter? Do you remove all of your SPAM? Do you actually need to have more than one?

With the flexibility you may be looking for in having multiple email accounts, you also increase the probability to have one of the accounts username and password stolen and less likely to find out right away.

If you have multiple email accounts, make it a good habit to check them on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Consider this to be a preventive measure. Just keep your guard up. Things happen when we let our guard down.

Corporate Email Account on Your Personal Device

Does your employer allows you to have access to Corporate Email on your mobile device(s)?

If you answer Yes, I would like to ask you 'Did you read all of the policies and procedures required for access'?

While it is not a best practice for employers to gather your location, text messages and call log information on a personally owned devices,  the ability to perform certain action on your mobile device is.

Some of these actions, include, but are not limited to:
  • Corporate Data removal (known as Enterprise Wipe)
  • Device Data deletion (known as Device Wipe) when employees refuse to remove corporate content upon resignation/termination.

Corporations in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare, Financial, Research & Development industries will protect their intellectual data at all cost, due to privacy and federal laws and regulations. However, deleting all of the data of a personally owned device is a decision that could have great negative implications.

The company would have to prove, that without a doubt, their data was at risk of being leaked, traded or misused with the intent to receive financial benefit.

How can you protect yourself?
  • Keep your personal data out of the corporate mailbox.
  • Personal contacts, calendar events and email, store them in your personal accounts.
  • For utilities, banking, Netflix, Amazon and other services you subscribe to, use your own email for password recovery.
  • Backup your data to iCloud or Google One. Use a STRONG password. Do not forget it. Do not share it.

Educate yourself about what is it that you are agreeing to when you setup / configure / enroll your device in order to receive Corporate email on your mobile device.
